Recumbents are for everyone!

Recumbent trikes are a lot of fun to ride. They’re comfortable, accessible, stable, and guaranteed to turn heads on the bike trails. Who can ride a recumbent trike? Just about anyone!

Why ride a recumbent trike?

There are a lot of great reasons that anyone would choose a recumbent trike over a traditional two wheeled upright bike, beyond the obvious cool factor (which is significant). Recumbent trikes are comfortable, stable, speedy, sporty, and practical. Let’s take a look at a few of the top factors that make recumbent trike riding a superior cycling experience.

Comfort

Which looks more comfortable to you?
Take a look at these two seating options… which would you choose? The “laid back” seating position on a recumbent makes it an incredibly comfortable ride. First, your body weight is evenly distributed over a larger area, reducing stress, pressure, and pain. The recumbent trike seating allows you to rest your weight on your back, thighs and posterior in a more natural seated position. You’re not hunched over when you ride, bearing weight on your wrists and shoulders, and you’re naturally facing ahead and up – not down toward the road – so you can enjoy the view without risking a kink in your neck. Think of it as taking your favorite chair for a spin around the neighborhood – it’s that comfortable!

Safety & Stability

A recumbent trike’s three wheels make it much more stable than a two wheeled bike. There’s no balancing required on mount and dismount, you don’t have to hold a trike up when you’re not in motion – in fact, whenever you take a moment to stop and enjoy the scenery, you’ll have the best seat in the house…or on the trail! The risk of falling off a recumbent trike is minimal, but should it happen, you have a much shorter distance to fall and you’re more likely to fall feet first than headfirst – and recumbent trikes are virtually impossible to flip forward.

No need to worry about putting a foot down to maintain balance in a tight turn, or losing balance on a slow hill climb – a trike stays stable and upright through ups, downs, turns, and all the maneuvers you can think of making. Rougher road conditions including bumps, potholes, sand, loose gravel, ice, etc. are no challenge to the stability of three wheels, either.

Style

No matter where you ride your recumbent trike, you’re going to attract attention. These trikes have a unique look that really turns heads. Cars will slow down and give you extra room as they check you out, and your friends are going to want to take a test ride. Fortunately, most recumbent trikes are easily adjustable, so you can “share the love” and quickly return back to your own custom fit. There’s no better way to make a statement on the bike trail than riding one of these effortlessly cool trikes. Just plan a little extra time for your outings – to answer questions from other curious cyclists!

Aerodynamics

Riding a recumbent trike presents a lower frontal area, which translates into reduced wind resistance, which means you’re expending less energy to move forward. As a result, every bicycle speed record is held by a recumbent rider. Trikes like the ICE VTX are built for speed – it was declared the fastest trike in the world in 2018 and 2019! Not only do trikes offer improved aerodynamics, the high seat back allows you apply more leverage to your pedaling power as you can push with your back against the seat for extra power.

Convenience and Utility

In addition to a stable, sporty, and uniquely cool ride, recumbent trikes can be practical vehicles for commuting and running errands. Every major trike manufacturer offers an array of cargo options, including bags, baskets, and racks in a variety of sizes. You can do a week’s worth of shopping and haul it home in style – especially with an e-motor that flattens the hills, extends your riding range, and lets you relax and enjoy the scenery no matter the terrain or distance.

These are just a few of the reasons recumbent trikes have an extra “cool factor” compared to your run-of-the-mill two-wheeler. Whether you’re looking for a reliable and safe commuter vehicle, a stable and sporty off-road adventure ride, a comfortable and stylish cruiser, or a high performance touring or race cycle, you’re sure to find a recumbent trike that’s as outstanding as you are, and ready to take on any challenge you can imagine.

We encourage you to check out the different trikes we offer on our website and contact us with any questions you might have. We can arrange demo rides of many models so you can find the perfect fit for your lifestyle. We love these trikes and we know you will too!

Love my Catrike 559. Bought a minivan to hall it and stuff for my Florida 4mo winter vacations. Leave trike in van all the time under a cover to keep eyes and sun off it. Will be 80 yr next B day. Love this blog THANK YOU, Ted
