RAD-Innovations designs, manufactures and sells unique mobility solution
Cornwall, Vermont – RAD-Innovations LLC™ is pleased to announce that it is accepting orders for the RAD RaceRunner™ running trike and will be shipping to North American customers in March 2020. There are four sizes available to fit a range of ages and body types. Base models are priced between US$1,550 and US$1,800 with additional features available to fine-tune the fit for the individual’s comfort and optimal positioning.
The RAD RaceRunner running trike is used by individuals who are challenged with balance, range of motion and mobility issues caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, stroke, or amputation, for example. A toddler with CP can be fitted to a small frame and run alongside their siblings, while a senior citizen rehabbing from knee replacement surgery or with balance issues can improve range of motion and strength using one of the larger sizes. The RAD RaceRunner running trike can be used in either recreational or competitive settings.
“Our goal has been to build a lightweight, affordable product that can be easily adjustable using standard parts and accessories available from local bicycle shops,” said David Black, co-founder of RAD-Innovations. “The RAD RaceRunner running trike is the first product of its kind built in the U.S.A. Manufactured with aluminum versus steel, it weighs and costs less; is easier and faster to ship; and offers more features and options than comparable products sold in Europe and Asia.”
The RAD RaceRunner running trike is made of aluminum and similar to a tricycle, but without pedals, that supports the user as they move. Despite significant physical challenges, most people can propel themselves on the RAD RaceRunner running trike considerably faster than they can move unassisted. The low center of gravity and product design offers stability and balance while running or walking. The saddle unit counteracts lateral sway and can also be used as a seat when at rest. The RAD RaceRunner running trike rolls so freely that even someone who is restricted to a wheelchair can often propel themselves by their own efforts. RAD RaceRunner running trike features:
RaceRunning as a Competitive Sport
RaceRunning is an internationally recognized disability sport and promoted by the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA). Athletes compete on a track in distances ranging from 40 to 5,000 meters. Like many other adaptive sports, competitors are classified based on their disability which allows athletes with physical challenges to compete on an even playing field. Originally developed in Denmark, the concept of RaceRunning was designed for foot-pushing wheelchair classes. It provides individuals who cannot compete in a racing wheelchair and/or ambulant run with opportunities for aerobic competition. While running frames are used in competitive environments, they are also suitable for anyone who just wants to experience the joy of movement. Often disabled persons are isolated and participation in a club-based sport allows them to be more independent, develop friendships and expand social networks. RAD-Innovations will establish a club in Middlebury, Vermont. Efforts in other countries have demonstrated that the growth of RaceRunning starts at the grassroots level with the development of local clubs. Local athletes can try the sport in a low-key, supportive environment, and as a network of clubs expands, competitive opportunities will become available.
